The Social Mobilisation
Network (SMNet), a programme
communication network was established in Uttar Pradesh in March 2001. Since
then, the SMNet has evolved into a team of more than
4800 community level mobilisers, and about 500 coordinators at the
sub-district, district and regional level. A UNICEF initiative, the main task
of the SMNet is to ensure that all children in the
areas of the deployed community mobilisers are vaccinated against Polio in
every round. The coordinators at sub-district, district, and regional level
are also responsible for involving governmental and non-governmental partners
at their respective levels. With special emphasis on partners representing
underserved communities of Uttar Pradesh, the coordinators work with local
religious and occupational leaders at both institutional and individual level
to ensure that all children are protected against Polio and that no child
suffers from Polio... ever again.
